Alumni at Newhouse NYC
Newhouse NYC offers alumni an opportunity to give back to students.
At Newhouse NYC, we love connecting our students with talented Syracuse University alumni working in the media industry.
Many alumni have volunteered as mentors, panelists and internship supervisors. We are grateful for your time and commitment. Because of you, students see firsthand that the Newhouse Network is a very real and powerful resource.
We welcome all Syracuse University alumni and would love to hear from you! Here are some of the many ways to get involved in Newhouse NYC:
Submit an internship
Newhouse NYC is built around an 18- to 24-hour-per-week internship matched to each student’s interests and abilities. We obviously love when the students get to intern for Syracuse University alumni, and we’re thrilled when they get to learn from people who truly understand what they have been learning up on campus before coming to NYC. We are always looking for new opportunities for the students, so if you would like to host an intern, please submit an internship and someone will be in touch with you soon.

Become a mentor
Each semester, Newhouse NYC students are paired with Newhouse alumni working in their field. The mentor meets with the students two to three times during the semester to give them advice and make sure they are adjusting to the city.
You can grab coffee, have your mentee visit your office (which is always a hit), or do something you’re passionate about, like spinning (yes, it’s been done!) or visiting a museum. There is a mentor breakfast at the beginning and end of the semester which mentors are encouraged to attend as well.
If you’re interested in being a mentor, please fill out the form below. You do not have to commit to this every semester. The mentor program is extremely fulfilling for both the mentor and mentee, so we hope you’ll sign up!
“My mentor and I did everything from getting sushi to going to SoulCycle together. We still keep in touch, and she’s been one of the most encouraging people in my career.”

Hold alumni office hours
For those unable to commit to being a mentor, we also offer Alumni Office Hours to our students a few times during the semester. Alumni come to the Fisher Center for two hours and do one-on-one informational interviews with students in four back-to-back 30-minute meetings. We set up the meetings, so all you have to do is volunteer your time and show up!

Host a Lunch & Learn
Throughout the semester, we take students to meet with alumni at their office for a lunch visit. The visits usually last about one to two hours, which comprises an office tour and a short Q&A with the host and any co-workers he or she wants to invite. We will provide lunch. The students love getting to see yet another office space and meeting the people during the Q&A.

Speak on a panel
We host panels and lectures throughout the semester: everything from how to be the strongest intern to where to find the strongest cup of coffee. We also often bring in alumni as guest speakers and lecturers in our classes.
If you’d like to be on a Newhouse NYC panel or be considered for a guest speaker, please submit the form below. We’d love to have you involved!
“The Newhouse NYC program gave me a competitive advantage because of the great panelists and speakers we met. The alumni go out of their way to help you succeed in your future career.”
