Student Life

In addition to classwork and you internship, our Newhouse LA program offers many social and cultural opportunities to enjoy. We encourage you to have some fun while you are here and take full advantage of the California sunshine! You can find out more about Los Angeles and our neighborhoods at

We also have a department of Advancement and External Affairs here in Los Angeles, which organizes many special events to engage alumni. Our Newhouse LA students have the unique opportunity to attend these events while they are here in California.

Newhouse LA has made arrangements with a  property management company to provide fully furnished apartments with a short term lease while participating in the program.  Students will apply directly to the management company and sign an individual lease. Students may also find alternative housing.

Los Angeles is very much a car-centric city.  Access to a car is the best way to navigate between home, an internship and the SULA Center.  Some students each semester use a ride share company like Uber or Lyft instead of arranging for a car.  There is a public transportation system in LA but it is limited geographically.  Using public transportation may increase commute time and may also require several transfers between trains and buses. Both ride share and public transportation may limit the internships to which students can apply as some internships require that the student have a car.

All transportation options should be researched thoroughly to understand the costs involved and the challenges each mode presents.

Safety and Security

Newhouse LA works with the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety to provide a safe and secure educational, cultural, and working environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

It is Syracuse University’s policy to provide anyone, on request, with a printed copy of the University’s policies and procedures regarding campus security and safety, as well as crime rates and statistics for the most recent three-year period. A copy of Your Safety and Security at Syracuse University, a handbook that provides this information, is available from DPS. The University’s crime information is also posted on the U.S. Department of Education website.
