Sports Media Communications in Los Angeles

In collaboration with Olivia Stomski and the Newhouse Sports Media Center, and beginning in Spring 2024, Newhouse LA will be offering exciting new academic, internship and mentorship opportunities for Newhouse majors interested in sports as a career path.

ACADEMICS

We are planning to offer two of the following 3-credit courses:

• SMC 422 – Sports Production
• MND 454 – Sports Writing Across Platforms 
• SMC 400 – Sports Content for Social Platforms 
• SMC 434 – The Sports Media Pitch
• SMC 330 – Esports and Media  

In addition:

• TRF 475 – Entertainment Industry Practicum/Internship (1, 2 or 3 credits)
• COM 506 – Communications Law for TRF (3 credits) 
• COM 505 – Communications Law for Journalists (3 credits)

Additional electives:

• TRF 471 – TV Nation
• TRF 425 – The Writer’s Journey
• TRF 415 – Acting for Writers, Producers & Directors
• TRF 430– Marketing for Film & TV
• ENG 464 – Classic Hollywood Cinema

Must enroll in at least 12 credits

INTERNSHIPS

• Curating a list of sports industry internships

PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT

• Instructors with experience in the sports space
• Guest speakers
• Mentor program
• Alumni involvement

CULTURAL EVENTS

• Past field trips have included Dodger games, Clipper games, Team Liquid e-Sports, etc.
