The Newhouse Career Development Center hosts seminars, career fairs and events with alumni and experts, all designed to help students step confidently from college to career.
Job Hunt Series: We have two sessions that focus on teaching students how to do a proactive job search. Session one, Proactive vs. Reactive, covers how to organize a proactive, self-directed search and learn the strategies to plan a specific path to success. Our second session, Mastering Networking, teaches student how to establish and maintain professional relationship in the communications industry. Students learn the best practices of networking. After completing both sessions, students will gain access to the Newhouse Network.
As a supplement to the job hunt series, we offer Career Lab, a judgment free zone for students to work on their job search with support of CDC staff counselors.
Résumé & Cover Letter Writing: In this seminar we teach students how to create a one page, relevant résumé geared towards their target audience and how to write a strong cover letter.
Finding an Internship: There are a lot of internships out there! In our internship seminar we teach students how to conduct a proactive internship search, plus discover resources both on and off campus.
In addition to our regular seminars that are held weekly, we also host specific skills-based sessions on interviewing and how to successfully navigate career fairs.
The Tina Press and David Rubin Career Development Center (CDC) hosts two Career Fairs per year for students to meet and network with employers. Students also have the opportunity to meet employers during employer info sessions.
Business and Communications Career Fair: The Newhouse Business and Communications Career Fair is a chance for students to meet industry professionals, collect business cards and company information and prospect for internships or even jobs. This is a great event for students to make connections for internships in the Syracuse area, as well as with national companies that offer opportunities.
Newhouse Communications Recruitment Days: Newhouse Communications Recruitment Days is a two-day recruiting event held each April. Companies with open communications positions come to campus for a career fair and on-campus interviews. While the focus of the event is entry-level hiring, there are also plenty of companies who want to speak with students about internships.
Employer Information Sessions: Newhouse is a target school for companies! We host employers during the academic year for information sessions and a chance to meet Newhouse students.
Newhouse Alumni Partnership Program: The Newhouse School is fortunate to have very engaged alumni to help mentor students. Our Newhouse Alumni Partnership Program is held over Winter Break and is an opportunity to match students to alumni who have volunteered to have a job shadow or have students work on projects!
