Newhouse students dominate the competition at SPJ Mark of Excellence Region 1 contest
Newhouse School students earned more overall wins and honors than any other school competing in this year’s Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence Region 1 competition.
The competitive contest recognizes college media work produced by students at schools throughout the Northeast, including Columbia Journalism School, the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, Harvard University, Boston University College of Communications and Pennsylvania State University, among others.
With a total of 18 winners and 19 finalists, Newhouse students and projects accounted for 25% of the contest’s total honors and 32% of wins—more than Columbia, Newmark, Penn State and Harvard combined.
“This impressive showing is emblematic of the strong work our journalism students produce each day across all the various outlets,” says Newhouse dean Mark J. Lodato. “I’m proud of them, and the faculty who help them succeed. I’m excited to see how they do next at the national level.”
