Students in the Newhouse School’s Goldring Arts Journalism and Communications program cover arts and culture around the world—and here in Central New York, thanks to a new partnership with Central New York Magazine.
Starting with the May/June issue, a rotating group of Goldring students will pen the magazine’s arts column, covering everything from theater, film and visual arts to music and dance.
It’s one of several school-industry partnerships launched this academic year, with more planned for the coming months.
The partnership was developed by Goldring director Eric Grode, who notes the benefits to both the magazine and the students. “We offer CNY Magazine an entire battalion of skilled young writers who have spent the last year immersed in the local arts scene from several different angles. The students get gorgeous clips and some compensation, which was important to me.”
The current issue features a profile of freelance set designer Czerton Lim, written by Goldring student Matthew Nerber. Lim, who teaches at SUNY Fredonia, is connected to CNY through his work for Syracuse Stage and the Rev Theatre Company in nearby Auburn.
“I loved peeking behind the curtain with Czerton,” says Nerber. “He’s such a humble, talented guy who just loves the theater, and creating worlds for audiences to get lost in.”
The Goldring program runs for one year. This year’s cohort of students has been assigned stories that will run a few months after they graduate, which will give next year’s cohort time to get acclimated and learn about Syracuse’s arts scene before taking on new assignments, Grode says.
Students will identify and pitch story ideas, with some assignments coming from Grode or the magazine staff. They will participate in the partnership on a voluntary basis, though Grode plans to tap those students who are particularly well suited for specific assignments.
CNY Magazine is available at Wegmans, Barnes and Noble and other locations throughout Central New York. The May/June issue is due on newsstands this Friday.
