Statement from Interim Dean Amy Falkner

November 18, 2019

Together with the faculty and staff of the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, I condemn the racist and anti-Semitic incidents that have occurred on our campus. I offer my personal support to our students and our community, particularly students of color, international students and others directly impacted by these events. The Newhouse faculty and staff share our students’ desire for a diverse and inclusive university, and we will continue to work toward that end.

On Friday, Associate Dean Hub Brown and Associate Director for Recruitment and Diversity Wes Whiteside hosted an open forum at the school, allowing students to ask questions and share their thoughts and concerns about these incidents. Faculty and staff were invited to attend and support the students. We will have more discussions in the near future and in the spring.

These incidents have led to frank and difficult conversations among members of our community, but they are needed. As faculty, staff and administrators of the Newhouse School, we want to hear students’ voices and understand what we can do to help and to insure they feel safe.

While we may not have all the answers—these are big, societal issues that are under discussion—we pledge to stand with our students, fully prepared to engage in these discussions and make our campus a better place.

Sincerely,

Amy Falkner signature
