Events are open to all Newhouse students, faculty, staff and alumni

Sports journalist and Newhouse alumnus Ian Eagle ’90 kicked off the Newhouse Sports Media Center’s new online speaker series Monday night with a Zoom discussion that drew in around 60 students and alumni.

Eagle, who is a play-by-play announcer with CBS Sports, YES Network and Westwood One Radio, discussed his career and the importance of building professional relationships. He offered tips to students about work they can do even as they are confined to their homes. And he urged up-and-coming sports journalists to “remember who you are doing this for: the audience.”

Eagle was presented with the Marty Glickman Award for Leadership in Sports Media from the Newhouse School in 2018.

The Sports Media Center regularly hosts a large number of speakers each semester, and students had reached out to center director Olivia Stomski to say they were disappointed at having to miss those events this spring. This led Stomski to begin planning the online series, she said. Eagle was already scheduled to speak to students in the Television Sports Play-by-Play course taught by “Voice of the Orange” Matt Park, who is an adjunct at Newhouse. Stomski realized his talk would be the perfect way to launch the online series.

Stomski hopes to host a speaker at least once a week. Mike Tirico ’88 of NBC Sports will be the next guest of the series Thursday, April 2, at 6 p.m. Gideon Cohen ’99 of the Montag Group will speak next week.

The series is open to Newhouse students, faculty, staff and alumni. For more information or to attend, contact Stomski at
