Ariana Day Yuen '12, founder and CEO of agroforestry venture Forested Foods, will be launching her company March 21 on the United Nations’ International Day of Forests with Maryiza, a line of single-origin honeys from Ethiopia’s indigenous tree flora.

“Forested Foods was imagined, in part, to prove we can defy usual tensions between profit and socio-ecological impact,” says Yuen, a graduate of the Newhouse School's advertising program. “Harmonizing forest conservation and local communities’ financial gains from agroforestry is foundational to our ability to deliver the most distinctive, sustainable, and traceable products to our customers.”

Maryiza trains and works with smallholder farming communities across Ethiopia’s highly biodiverse Southwestern Afromontane forests to manage bee colonies and produce honey according to the flowering seasons of indigenous tree flora. Maryiza, meaning “she comes with honey” in Amharic, is building a network of female smallholder farmers.
