Stream On: The Evolution of the Major Label Revenue Model

Streaming has saved the music business: It’s become conventional wisdom. But what does that really mean? Few people are as qualified to discuss this topic as the inaugural speaker for our spring semester lecture series as Jennifer Fowler, one of the key executives driving the business relationship between Sony Music and services such as Spotify, Apple and Amazon. In this week’s talk we’ll go behind the scenes of how streaming has generated new revenue opportunities for music, as well as the opportunities and challenges that exist in the streaming space. And of course, we’ll discuss Ms. Fowler’s career path, as well as general industry trends affecting her work.

Jennifer Fowler, senior vice president, marketing and commercial business, Sony Music Entertainment   

Jennifer Fowler currently serves as senior vice president, commercial business & marketing within the U.S. Sales division of Sony Music Entertainment. In this role, Fowler manages account leadership and strategy with a focus on deriving revenue and artist exposure from Sony Music’s relationships with all commercial partners including Spotify, Apple and Amazon. Fowler’s team focuses on growing music subscription by identifing and exploiting new promotional and monetization opportunities that directly benefit SME’s roster of artists.

Fowler leads Sony Music’s global “One Sony” efforts to match Sony Music artists with promotional and commercial initiatives throughout the Sony family of companies. In addition, she oversees SonyMusicU, the industry’s leading college brand ambassador program. SonyMusicU is a significant contributor to Sony’s efforts to develop and break new talent.

Fowler started her career in 1996 as an independent radio promoter. By the early 2000’s she successfully transitioned into emerging music and tech leading artist and label relations for two of the leading digital music start-ups. Prior to joining Sony’s US Sales team she spent thirteen years leading digital marketing at RCA Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment where she managed campaigns for a top selling roster of acts including Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Foo Fighters, P!nk and Miley Cyrus.
