Newhouse Undergraduate Academic Forms and Procedures for Spring 2020

The following forms and procedures are intended for:

  • Singly enrolled Newhouse students
  • Dually enrolled Newhouse/iSchool students

If you are a dual student with A&S or Whitman, visit your home college for more information on their forms and procedures.

Instructions for each form/procedure are listed below.

Forms that are available online are linked; contact your academic adviser for forms without a link.

Consult the Academic Calendar for appropriate deadlines. Note: Courses that do not run the entire semester have unique deadlines!

Newhouse Forms

  • Add/Drop
    • Students can add courses on MySlice until the add deadline. If you need to add a course after the add deadline, contact your academic adviser to determine if you are eligible to submit a Request to Late Add a Course. Late add requests will only be supported for students with extenuating circumstances.

The University is allowing students to drop in-person classes through April 3, 2020.

Dropping a class means it will be removed from your schedule as if you never took it. You may not drop a class if it will bring you below 12 credits. In this case, you can withdraw.

To drop a class (both main campus and abroad classes):

      1. Send a request from your @syr.edu email to your Newhouse Academic Adviser with “DROP” in subject line with your first and last name (example: DROP – Smith, Chris)

      2. Include the following information in the body of the email in this order:

      • Your SU ID

      • Your last name, first name

      • 5-digit class number from MySlice (example: 12345)

      • Course subject code (example: HST, MAT)

      • Course number (example: 102)

      • Request DROP

      • Your adviser will vet your request, approve (or consult with you) and email the Registrar or SUAbroad for appropriate action. The drop should show up on your schedule in about a week.

      Notes:

      • Students will not be able to drop below full-time status (12 credits).
      • Sections swaps will not be allowed after the add deadline.
      • Students are strongly encouraged to check with their Newhouse academic adviser before dropping a course. It is the student’s responsibility to understand the impact of dropping a course on their academic plan, as it may affect their progression toward degree and delay graduation.

      Restrictions:

      • First year Newhouse students cannot web drop courses in the fall semester without permission from the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office.
      • Graduating Newhouse seniors cannot web drop courses their last semester without permission from the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office.

For flex long courses, late-starting courses, and any other courses that begin or end outside the normal semester (ex - PED, HEA, COM 344, 5-week courses) contact your academic adviser. Flexible format courses have unique deadlines. Refer to your class schedule on MySlice and click the calendar icon to view deadlines.

  • Course Overload
    • Students pay the same tuition rate between 12 and 19 credits per semester. In rare cases, it may be necessary to take more than 19 credits in a single semester. Students can request a course overload from their home college. Registration for courses beyond 19 credits is subject to extra tuition charges.

Tuition Exemption: Juniors and seniors who receive permission from their home college for a credit overload may request a tuition exemption for additional credits (over 19) if they meet the following criteria:

      1. Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at the beginning of the semester for which the overload was approved.
      2. No outstanding incomplete grades.
      3. Registration as a full-time student at Syracuse University for two previous semesters

A copy of the petition approving the overload must be presented to Bursar, where the determination of eligibility for this rate exception will be made.

Exception: Winterlude course tuition is charged separately, even though Winterlude courses appear in the spring term. Tuition exemption cannot be used to cover Winterlude tuition.
