Remote Academic Advising

The Newhouse Advising Office will remain open and available to students virtually during the non-residential instruction period occurring after spring break.

Hours: 8:30-5 EST, M-F

Though in-person services will temporarily be suspended, the Undergraduate Advising Office is prepared to continue assisting you online and over the phone. Please read on for information on how our services and resources will be available during this period and keep checking your @syr.edu email for updates.

Contacting your academic adviser

Quick questions: Students who have quick questions should email nhadvise@syr.edu or their academic adviser. We will do our best to answer your questions within one business day. Our virtual office is open from 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Eastern Standard Time.

Appointments: Students who need to discuss an issue in depth should schedule an appointment with their academic adviser through Orange Success.

If you are unable to book an appointment with your academic adviser, contact Suzanne Maguire at semaguir@syr.edu.

  • For Skype appointments, include your Skype username when making your appointment.
  • For Zoom appointments, your adviser will send you the URL for the meeting.
  • For phone appointments, include your phone number when making your appointment (domestic calls only).

Dropping or requesting a class to be pass/fail

The University is allowing students to drop a class or switch it to pass/fail through April 10, 2020.

Note: You may not drop a class if it will bring you below 12 credits. In this case, you can withdraw.

Any courses may be taken pass/fail. Please consult your academic adviser regarding any changes.

2020 Registration

Registration will take place April 6–May 6.

If you have an advising hold, fill out the Registration Advising Form and email it to nhadvise@syr.edu.

Navigating Your Newhouse Degree Seminar

The 45-minute “Navigating” seminar is geared toward first-year and sophomore students and covers the following:

  • Recap of your core requirements
  • How to explore and research SU minors as well as adding a second major
  • Additional Newhouse requirements—Global and Diversity
  • Planning coursework to accommodate both study abroad and a professional semester or summer in either Los Angeles or New York City

Virtual sessions have ended for the spring ’20 semester but you can watch a video of the seminar.

Intra-University Transfer Seminars:

Students may apply to transfer into Newhouse from other Syracuse University schools/colleges. Please refer to Public Communication intra-university transfer application rules.
Admission Criteria:

  • Your cumulative Syracuse University GPA required for admission varies each semester, depending upon the number of spaces available and the number and strength of the applicant pool.
  • Completing a minimum of 15 graded credit hours at SU and a minimum of 30 credits earned at SU. NOTE: This requirement applies to fall ’20 admission only in response to the University’s pass/fail policy for the spring ’20 semester.
  • Receiving a B or higher in one of the following:  WRT 105, WRT 109, CAS 100, ENL 211, ENL 213. NOTE: For fall ’20 applicants only, we will accept a “pass” in this class if taken in the spring ’20 semester.
  • Space availability (this has no relation to the major you choose)

Application: Click here to obtain the IUT application.  No other materials are required.
Submission: Email your completed IUT form to nhadvise@syr.edu.  Send a PDF or take a clear photo.  We will except your electronic signature.
Deadlines: May 1 for fall semester and Dec. 15 for spring semester.

Note: Photography and Graphic Design majors may require a minimum of five semesters on main campus.
