Forms and Procedures

Newhouse Undergraduate Academic Forms and Procedures

The following forms and procedures are intended for:

  • Singly enrolled Newhouse students
  • Dually enrolled Newhouse/iSchool students

If you are a dual student with A&S or Whitman, visit your home college for more information on their forms and procedures.

Instructions for each form/procedure are listed below.

Forms that are available online are linked; forms without a link are available in the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office, 316 Newhouse 3.

Consult the Academic Calendar for appropriate deadlines. Note: Courses that do not run the entire semester have unique deadlines!

Newhouse Forms

  • Add/Drop
    • Students can add courses on MySlice until the add deadline. If you need to add a course after the Add deadline, visit 316 Newhouse 3 to determine if you are eligible to submit a Request to Late Add a Course. Late add requests will only be supported for students with extenuating circumstances.

      Students can web drop classes on MySlice until the academic/financial drop deadline.

      Notes:

      • Students will not be able to drop below full-time status (12 credits).
      • Sections swaps will not be allowed after the add deadline.
      • Students are strongly encouraged to check with their Newhouse Academic Adviser before dropping a course. It is the student’s responsibility to understand the impact of dropping a course on their academic plan, as it may affect their progression toward degree and delay graduation.

      Restrictions:

      • First year Newhouse students cannot web drop courses in the fall semester without permission from the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office.
      • Graduating Newhouse seniors cannot web drop courses their last semester without permission from the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office.

      Flex long courses, late starting courses, and any other courses that begin or end outside the normal semester require a paper add/drop form (available in the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office, 316 Newhouse 3).

  • Advertising Emphasis Petition
    • 1. Review the Choosing an Advertising Emphasis packet (available in 316 Newhouse 3).
      2. Pick up the Advertising Emphasis Petition in 316 Newhouse 3 and complete the petition.
      3. Obtain a signature from your Newhouse faculty adviser.
      4. After your Newhouse faculty adviser has signed, obtain a signature from the advertising department chair (located in 318 Newhouse 3).
      5. Submit the completed petition to 316 Newhouse 3.

  • Change Faculty Adviser
      1. 1. Pick up the Request to Change Faculty Adviser form in 316 Newhouse 3 and complete the form.
      2. 2. Obtain a signature from your new faculty adviser.
      3. 3. Submit the form to 316 Newhouse 3.
  • Course Overload
    • Students pay the same tuition rate between 12 and 19 credits per semester. In rare cases, it may be necessary to take more than 19 credits in a single semester. Students can request a course overload from their home college. Registration for courses beyond 19 credits is subject to extra tuition charges.

      Tuition Exemption: Juniors and seniors who receive permission from their home college for a credit overload may request a tuition exemption for additional credits (over 19) if they meet the following criteria:

      1. Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at the beginning of the semester for which the overload was approved.
      2. No outstanding incomplete grades.
      3. Registration as a full-time student at Syracuse University for two previous semesters

      A copy of the petition approving the overload must be presented to Bursar, where the determination of eligibility for this rate exception will be made.

      Exception: Winterlude course tuition is charged separately, even though Winterlude courses appear in the spring term. Tuition exemption cannot be used to cover Winterlude tuition.

      Singly enrolled Newhouse students or dually enrolled Newhouse/iSchool students may visit the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office, 316 Newhouse 3, to submit a course overload petition.

  • Declaration of Major
      1. 1. Pick up the Official Major Declaration form in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. 2. Complete, sign, and submit the form to 316 Newhouse 3.
  • Declaration of Minor
    • 1. Print the Declaration of Minor form or pick up the form in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. Complete the form.
      3. Obtain a signature from your Newhouse faculty adviser.
      4. Obtain a signature from the minor coordinator.

      • Be aware of application deadlines and requirements for your intended minor; deadlines and requirements are listed on each minor’s home college website

      5. Once you have obtained signatures from both your Newhouse faculty adviser and the minor coordinator, submit the form to 316 Newhouse 3

  • Early Participation in Commencement
    • Students graduating in December may petition to participate in commencement ceremonies the spring prior to their graduation date.

      Bachelor's degree candidates who will complete their course work by August are invited to participate in the May commencement ceremonies; no petition is necessary.

      1. 1. Pick up the Petition for Early Participation in Commencement in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. 2. Meet with your Newhouse academic adviser to confirm eligibility; the following criteria is evaluated on a case-by-case basis:
      • Student needs 18 credits or less to complete their degree.
      • Student has developed an academic plan with their Newhouse Academic Adviser to finish their degree by December.
      1. 3. File your Diploma Request in MySlice as a December graduate.
      2. 4. Submit your completed Petition for Early Participation in Commencement to 316 Newhouse 3.

      Note:

      Participation in convocation and commencement ceremonies does not indicate that degree requirements have been completed. Conferral of degree occurs once all degree requirements are satisfactorily completed.

  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
    • Please complete, sign and submit the FERPA release form to the Office of the Registrar if you want to disclose (verbally or in the form of written copies of records) your educational records, including but not limited to: personally identifiable information from your education records to individuals, other universities, employers or third parties that you authorize Syracuse University to release.

      Authorization to Release Educational Information

  • Incomplete Grade Request
      1. 1. Print the Request for Incomplete Grade form or pick up the form in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. 2. Complete Part A of the form.
      3. 3. Have the course instructor complete Part B of the form.
      4. 4. The course instructor will sign the form and send it directly to the department chair for signature.
      5. 5. The department chair will sign and send the form directly to the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office, 316 Newhouse 3.
      6. 6. The student is responsible for completing all outlined course requirements by the date specified on the form.
  • Independent Study Proposal
      1. 1. Print the Proposal for Independent Study form or pick up the form in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. 2. Work with your faculty sponsor to complete the form; obtain a signature from your sponsor.
      3. 3. Obtain a signature from your Newhouse faculty adviser.
      4. 4. Obtain a signature from the department chair of the course.
      5. 5. Submit the form to 316 Newhouse 3.
  • Internship Proposal/Agreement
      1. 1. Review the Steps to Internship Credit Registration sheet (available in 316 Newhouse 3).
      2. 2. Print the Internship Proposal/Agreement form or pick up the form in 316 Newhouse 3.
      3. 3. Complete Page 1 of the form.
      • Newhouse internships are always registered as COM 470.
      • Indicate the number of credits and whether you’d like to take the internship pass/fail or for a letter grade.
      1. 4. Find a Newhouse faculty sponsor. Work with your Newhouse Faculty Sponsor to complete Page 2 of the form. Obtain a signature from your Newhouse faculty sponsor once Page 2 is complete.
      2. 5. Obtain a signature from your Newhouse Faculty Adviser (your adviser may also act as your sponsor).
      3. 6. Obtain a signature from your Newhouse major’s Department Chair (318 Newhouse 3).
      4. 7. Submit the form to 316 Newhouse 3.
      5. 8. Register your internship on Handshake.
  • Intra-University Transfer (IUT) Application
    • For current Newhouse students transferring out of Newhouse or adding a dual major:

      1. 1. Attend an IUT information session for the program you wish to transfer into.
      2. 2. Print the IUT application here or pick up the application in 316 Newhouse 3.
      3. 3. Complete the application and collect Newhouse signatures (if necessary):
      • For students transferring out of Newhouse, a Newhouse signature is not necessary.
      • For students adding a dual major, obtain a signature from the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office, 316 Newhouse 3.
      1. 4. Submit the IUT form to the college you wish to transfer into/add by the application deadline.
      • Be aware of IUT application deadlines and requirements; deadlines and requirements are listed on each college’s website.
  • Leave of Absence
    • To initiate a request for a leave of absence from the University, contact your home college’s Undergraduate Advising Office directly. Singly enrolled Newhouse students or dually enrolled Newhouse/iSchool students may visit the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office, 316 Newhouse 3, or call 315-443-4722.

  • Pass/Fail
      1. 1. Pick up the Grading Option form in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. 2. Complete the “Pass/Fail Grade in Letter-Graded Course” section of the form.
      • Enter the correct class number, department prefix, course number, and section of the course you wish to take pass/fail.
      1. 3. Submit the form to 316 Newhouse 3 by the pass/fail deadline.
  • Petition to Faculty
    • A Petition to Faculty is used when petitioning an exception, exemption or substitution. Each petition is reviewed on an individual basis. The supporting documentation and signatures required for each petition differ depending on the request. You should discuss your request with the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office before submitting your petition.

      Print the Petition to Faculty or pick up the petition in 316 Newhouse 3.

  • Rate Exception (ninth semester senior)
    • Seniors who have completed eight regular semesters as a full-time student and who have 11 or fewer credits to complete toward their bachelor’s degree may petition to take the remaining credits during their last (ninth) semester at the University College tuition rate. Students who are able to complete their degree requirements in fewer than eight regular semesters (e.g. due to increased course loads per semester or course work completed during summer) are not eligible for this rate exception.

      Singly enrolled Newhouse students or dually enrolled Newhouse/iSchool students may visit the Newhouse Undergraduate Advising Office, 316 Newhouse 3, to inquire about this tuition rate exception.

  • Readmission/Termination of Leave of Absence
      1. 1. Request an Application for Readmission/Termination of Leave of Absence form from your home college.
      • If you are returning from a Medical Leave of Absence, you must also contact the Dean of Students Office (formerly the Office of Student Assistance) to begin the readmission process.
      1. 2. Complete, sign, and submit the form to your Home College by the appropriate deadline:
      • July 15 for fall readmission
      • Dec. 1 for spring readmission
  • Transfer Credit Petition
    • Before registering for the transfer course:

      1. 1. Pick up the Transfer Credit Petition in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. 2. Complete the petition and obtain a course syllabus for the transfer course.
      3. 3. Submit the petition and the course syllabus to the corresponding SU Department for review.
      4. 4. Once the course is approved and the Department’s signature is obtained, submit the petition and the syllabus to 316 Newhouse 3 for review; you will receive confirmation via email once your petition has been approved or denied.

      After completing the transfer course:

      1. 1. You must earn a C or better in the course for the credit to transfer.
      2. 2. Once you receive a grade for the course, have an official transcript sent from the transfer institution directly to Newhouse.

      1. 1. Print the Withdrawal Petition or pick up the form in 316 Newhouse 3.
      2. 2. Complete the form.
      3. 3. Obtain a signature from the course instructor.
      4. 4. Obtain a signature from the course department chair.
      5. 5. Obtain a signature from your Newhouse faculty adviser.
      6. 6. Submit the form to 316 Newhouse 3 by the withdrawal deadline.
