Images are used in many communications fields—magazine, newspaper, multimedia, public relations and graphics. Photographers usually go two different routes—photojournalism or photo illustration for advertising, art and other creative venues. Established photographers often work freelance or on assignment. Beginning photo illustrators usually start as photo or production assistants at a studio or magazine while they hone their skills. Newspapers, wire services and magazines employ photojournalists. Digital media has created greater opportunities for photographers to publish their work.
