"I fell in love with newspaper design" in Syracuse:
By Scott Goldman
"I
was a junior at SU, taking my first newspaper design class, when Professor
(Marshall) Matlock informed us we would be assisting with the first
SND competition to be hosted at Syracuse. Looking at the thousands of
entries and listening to the talented judges and assistants, I was floored
by the experience and -- honestly, with no exaggeration
— that weekend changed my life."
"I fell in love with newspaper design that weekend and I knew
that was where I wanted to focus my career. Suddenly, I read the newspaper
differently, looking hard at the design rather than just the writing,
and watching how the World’s best newspapers balance both visuals
and content so well."
"Every February, I return to Syracuse to assist with the competition.
Each year I leave SU revitalized, both professionally and personally
(hey, it is the only time of year I get to eat at Varsity
— a popular pizza hangout for students). I leave filled with expectation
for the months to come. I have been very fortunate to work at some great
newspapers in my career thus far, and I know that it all began on a
snowy (of course) weekend in Syracuse, 15 years ago."
"I am so proud of the role Syracuse continues to play in the
growth of SND's annual competition. In many ways, the competition defines
the state of the art of our industry, and I just love the fact that
every February newspaper designers around the world look to Syracuse
to show us the best."
