CHEN RECEIVES SU / SND 2003 'DESIGNER OF YEAR'
HONOR
(JENNIFER

about this talented student.)
Caroline Chen,
a graduate student in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications
at SU, was named SU / SND News Designer of the Year for 2003. The announcement
was made at the School’s Awards Ceremony April 29, 2003.
Chen, a member of the SU / SND affiliate, took the News Design class
the Spring semester, 2003, as well as assisted with the SND annual international
competition in February 2003.
She was a teaching assistant in graphics labs during her graduate work
and a photography intern at The Post-Standard, the Syracuse, N.Y. daily
newspaper.
“Miss Chen is an all-round student with many talents,”
says C. Marshall Matlock, faculty adviser to the SU / SND affiliate.
“She has done an outstanding job in all classes and activities
showing both design and leadership talents,” Matlock says.
The award was established with a grant from the Society for News Design
several years ago as a “thank you” for the work the School
does in hosting the annual international competition. The 2003 judging
marked the School’s 15th year of co-sponsoring the event at the
university.
“We have been able to award several hundred dollars each year
to an outstanding news design student,” Matlock says. The award
can go to an undergraduate or graduate student who has “shown
outstanding achievements in news design,” he says. It is not limited
to one student a year but that is normally the way it works out, he
says.
The School’s Dean, David Rubin, presented the award at a ceremony
attended by several hundred students, faculty and staff. A reception
followed to honor all award winners for the academic year.
Chen was a photo lab manager while a graduate student giving her excellent
experience working with others, Matlock says. Her teaching assistant
experience in graphic labs helped her continue her design skills. Several
faculty members recommended her, he says, proving she shows talents
in many areas, not just design.
She received an undergraduate degree in Magazine from the Newhouse
School in May 2002. She will have a master’s degree in Photography
when she graduates by the end of 2003.
Any Newhouse student is eligible to be nominated for the award. Deadline
for nominations and supporting information is early April with the winner
announced in late April at the School’s annual Awards Ceremony.
