Overview:

Newspapers belong to the future. This year's winning papers understand that. They are exploring in their different ways, taking risks, devising new formulas, pushing the frontiers of technology and ideas. In London and Mexico City, in Glasgow and Warsaw, and in the Swedish town of Uppsala, we find the future.
In each of these places, we hear a conversation going on between readers and editors. The winning newspapers are obviously listening.

Here is what the World's Best-Designed Newspapers™ are doing to set themselves apart:

  • They know who they are. Their identity is embedded in all of their design and all of their content. It lives in the way they handle the smallest details.
  • They cross boundaries. The old way: we are serious; we are humorous; we are down-market. The new way: whatever works.
  • They are passionate about all that they do. They resist compromise.
  • They know the importance of design. They respond to the need for excellence in typography, photos, graphics and illustrations.
  • They work as a team. It is impossible to tell where the visual editing ends and the word editing begins.
  • They make decisions. They know their material, they plan it, they organize it, and they build pathways for readers.
  • They are inventive. They look for new solutions. They grapple with the problems that have dogged us for decades.
  • They are willing to invest. They spend on quality - in technology, in paper, in printing.
  • They have a relationship with their readers. They are interested in their lives. They talk to them in their writing.
  • They keep their eyes open. They watch trends in their industry and in their demographics. They are willing to change.
