Newhouse School of Communications

Magazine Journalism:

Senior magazine majors and graduate students in Magazine, Newspaper, and Online Journalism create professional magazine prototypes for their capstone experience in Advanced Editing. For that experience, they conceive an idea, create a mission statement and audience profile, assign an entire issue of articles, which the class writes, create the visual execution through software programs like InDesign and Photoshop, and map out the entire issue -- from cover to back page. Everyone does something: writing, editing, designing, working with photographers and illustrators, and communicating with the printer. The professors for this class create a real-world experience and drawn upon their own magazine backgrounds as editors for magazine launches such as Entertainment Weekly and Real Simple.
