Newhouse BJ Department Partners with ABC News on Campus

In Fall 2008, ABC News chose the Newhouse School to be part of its innovative new campus news program. Five Newhouse students were selected to staff a Syracuse University ABC news bureau. SU/Newhouse is one of five journalism/public communications schools in the US where student reporters focus on news of interest to a college-age audience. Masters Capstone Program

Sujata reporting in DC

The Newhouse school's broadcast journalism graduate student Washington Capstone Program got off to a fast start in 2008.

In its fourth year, the program allows student reporters to cover Washington for Nexstar Broadcast stations in Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. In addition, students file stories for stations in Syracuse and Binghamton, NY.

The annual National Folklife Festival features one of the country's 50 states each year. For 2008, the heavily attended festival on the Mall featured Texas, allowing Newhouse student-reporters to file numerous stories for TV stations in Texas.

Student reporter Richard Zussman was able to cover a story for WBNG-TV in Binghamton about an unusual ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. With little notice, the remains of a serviceman from the Korean War were finally buried at Arlington Cemetery. Missing for more than 50 years, the remains had recently been found and returned to the U.S.

During the first two weeks in July, student reporters also covered stories on legislation involving health care and retirement issues. Reporter Ted Johnsen filed a story for WMBD-TV in Peoria, Il. on cutbacks in airline service, and Megan Eaton reported on US Senate action on Medicare doctor fees for WTAJ Johnstown/Altoona, PA.
