The laboratories and classes in the broadcast journalism program are very much like the news business itself - focused and fast paced. The newsroom itself is modeled after and equipped as a professional facility. Students draw stories from the AP's ENPS, one of the most popular newsroom software systems and which is used by over 300 stations in the U.S. and over 600 stations nationwide, including ABC, BBC, and ESPN. In the field, broadcast journalism students use Panasonic DVCPro digital cameras. Editing is done in more than 12 editing suites in both linear and non-linear modes. Well before students hit the airwaves, however, they are well schooled in the basics: observing, digging for and gathering news, writing and rewriting, performing, and applying appropriate production techniques, As with all Newhouse majors, broadcast journalism students take the majority of their courses in the arts and sciences in order to become well rounded and informed individuals.
