Below are internship descriptions written by Newhouse students. They offer a good cross-section of the types of responsibilities our students take on during their internships.
I've interned for two semesters at WAER, a public radio station here in Syracuse. The first semester I did daily reporting: going to events, interviewing speakers and newsmakers, writing the story and then editing the audiotape into soundbites for air. Once a week I also engineered (ran the audio board) and hosted the evening news program, All Things Considered. This semester, I've concentrated on longer feature stories. These stories are longer (usually 5-8 minutes), include more interviews and require more audio production (mixing music into the background or including ambient sound). This semester I've also been voicing and producing "Tax Tips," a series about tax advice that airs every day for six weeks. -Suzanne Schaffer

I am currently interning at gURL.com, located in the iVillage offices at 500 7th Ave. There are 4 full time staff members and 4 interns, so the interns have a lot of hands-on experience. Interns write for all different sections of the website--fast facts, gURL guides, FYI, selectors (games), and we also come up with polls and dig or disses (where the girls write in about certain topics). Interns also moderate the message boards and edit comments written by the girls for various sections of the website. Each intern gets to do a final creative project of her choosing at the end of the internship. -Linda Buchwald

As the regional desk intern at The Post-Standard in the spring of 2007, I wrote stories about the people, places and events in the counties that surround Onondaga County. These included Neighbors section covers about town bicentennials, a central New York steam engine that was soon to get a new life on a railroad in Pennsylvania and an Oswego college graduate preparing to ride 4,500 miles to raise money for cancer. The most exciting stories came from going to Albany on Budget Day to write about Spitzer's proposed bottle bill and doing an A1, above-the-fold story about the Recording Industry Association of America's crackdown on students who illegally download music.
Although I worked mainly from the downtown office, I was able to travel to towns in the surrounding counties to learn more about the area and the people who live hereāand they, just like the people who work at the paper, are passionate about central New York. -Miyoko Ohtake
