Media Studies:
The graduate media studies program at Newhouse is for the student seeking critical analyses of the mass media. Through examination of contemporary media events, students assess the media's relationship with the world and how the two affect each other.
The media studies program provides valuable flexibility for the inquisitive student looking to pursue individual academic interests through coursework and research. To hone their research skills during their time at SU, many students pursue research assistantships, and an increasing number take their primary research to national conventions.
The program is an ideal choice for students with mass media experience who wish to examine critically the mass communication process. It is also an excellent preparation for doctoral study.
Students begin studies in late August of the fall semester and must complete 36 credits. Media studies students may take electives from any Newhouse department and other Syracuse University colleges. Working closely with academic advisors, the student works toward a degree that culminates with a thesis of his or her choice. Upon graduation, students enter research-related professions or continue their academic study at the doctoral level.
