Media Management:

Tetimonials from this year’s class

Felica Chou, communications specialist, Environmental Protection Agency

It is as if the Media Management education I received had been tailored just so I could apply what I've learned to my responsibilities at work. My job requires marketing skills, writing and communication skills, and the understanding of the new and old media media – all of which 11 months at Newhouse and Whitman have helped cultivate in me.

The program is one-of-a-kind in the nation, and we graduates learn how to think strategically from both a business and communications standpoint. Because of this, we have much more flexibility in the types of jobs we pursue. The Capstone was exceptionally helpful because working on my capstone project turned out to be an introduction to what I do now.

The professors here have been amazing with their unique experiences, invaluable advice and diverse contacts.

Colleen Keltz, communication specialist, Environmental Protection Agency

I applied for the position and was interviewed through the Communication Consortium held through the Career Center at Newhouse. I work on communication and outreach tools for community and intra-agency projects. Typical work ranges from writing communication plans for upcoming rules to be passed by Congress to answering press requests on specific environmental issues, to designing campaigns for the public.

The courses from Media Management that transfer over to my current work most frequently are: Competitive and Corporate Strategy, Marketing (both from Whitman), Communication Frontiers, our Capstone, and Social Entrepreneurship (Whitman elective). As EPA tries to move towards being more web and multimedia oriented, these courses help me think of the best way to operate in a 24/7 media world when we must deal with the constraints of operating within the federal government's regulatory and financial guidelines. These courses, combined with work I did as a research assistant, are helping me manage multiple projects and produce products that communicate modern, effective messages.

Like it or not, business decisions and the bottom line drive the communications industry. What makes the Media Management unique is the interdisciplinary collaboration between Newhouse and the Whitman School of Management. It gives students the business tools and management skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing media environment. When industry professionals ask me about the program, they are so impressed to learn that such a program even exists and immediately want to know more about it. The faculty come from all areas of the industry and always willing to engage with students. I know the degree will hold me in good stead throughout my career.

I moved across the country to pursue my Media Management degree from Syracuse University. The one-year program was very uplifting not only for my academic career, but personal life as well. The fast-paced intense program taught me various skills that made me a competitive job candidate post graduation. Five years later I am still utilizing the knowledge I learned from Syracuse. Money well spent!

The Media Management program builds the right foundation for the real world. The combination of Newhouse and Whitman faculty provide the right knowledge to be able to quickly make a difference. The program helped me to learn the fundamentals of media which I continue to count on today even as the technology and business environment evolve. My capstone project taught me to synthesize and present my own data to a large group which has been a skill which I have used countless times since leaving Syracuse.
