Media Management:
Welcome to the Media Management master’s program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.
Our program, offered jointly between the two colleges, combines the best of both schools. At Newhouse, students have the chance to study with professionally trained professors who have led television systems, newspaper newsrooms, advertising agencies, public relations firms and magazine editorial staffs. At the acclaimed Whitman school, students will learn the principles of managing people, financing corporations and starting new businesses.
Students in our media management program get the chance to study the challenges facing today’s media and learn the skills to solve those challenges or be inspired to create new frontiers.
The program especially focuses on new media. Students study the business models of mass media from management perspective and explore how the internet has challenged the communications industry.
The blend of communication and management skills prepares graduates for decision-making careers in national and global media. Students begin their studies in early July. They conclude the program by completing a six-credit capstone experience the following summer.
The program is an ideal extension of a communications degree, as up to six media management credits may be excused for previous relevant study. The program requires 36 to 42 credits, depending on academic experience. Students may not be excused from taking credits in the management area, nor may they be excused from taking credits on the basis of work experience for either school.
While previous full-time work experience is not a requirement for admission to this program, preference is given to applicants with some practical experience in communications or business.
