Newhouse School of Communications

Magazine, Newspaper, and
Online Journalism:

The Newhouse magazine, newspaper, and online (MNO) journalism program prepares students for the print and online journalism industry. Students in this program may focus on writing, reporting, design, or editing in preparation for careers at newspapers, magazines, wire services, and journalism web sites.

Through contemporary media coursework and real-world internships, Newhouse’s professional faculty focus on writing on deadline, narrative storytelling, and the professional demands of reporting. Students take courses in writing, reporting, editing, web design, research, and communications law. Elective credits may include political or sports reporting, graphic design, magazine article writing, and travel writing.

Many students seek out internships at local media, including The Post-Standard (Syracuse), The Utica Observer-Dispatch, Syracuse New Times, and Syracuse.com. Also available to students is the school’s new web product, which will feature student work produced for all media platforms in a state-of-the-art collaborative media lab, while bringing together majors in online, print, and broadcast; the visual technologies; and persuasive communications. The program begins in early July, and most students finish during the first six weeks of the following summer after completing a capstone course in journalism enterprise.

Most graduates begin careers as reporters or editors at medium or large newspapers or magazines. Others begin as wire-service reporters or with news web sites.
