Newhouse School of Communications

Arts Journalism:

During the Newhouse graduate student boot camp (a six-week, intensive summer program intended to give students a jumpstart in their studies), Goldring Arts Journalism master's students begin to work on articles for The Mix, a publication of the Goldring Arts Journalism program and a special supplement to the Syracuse Post-Standard.

Students are encouraged to highlight interesting and unique Central New York cultural happenings. They write about everything from local music and fine arts to film and theater. The Cultural Resources Council of Syracuse serves as a story resource, and gives students background on what is happening on the local arts scene. Next, students pitch their story ideas to visiting professional editors and then move through a series of workshops and re-writes.

Students not only write the articles for the supplement, but they also work closely with a team at the Syracuse Post-Standard and help with every aspect of the publication. They take photographs, edit the articles, work on page layout and design cover art. The entire process gives students a real-world understanding of how a newspaper supplement is put together, from start to finish.

The process is beneficial to both the students and the Syracuse community; it allows the students to familiarize themselves with the cultural community of Syracuse and provides members of the community with a fresh look at what is happening in their own backyard.
