Leading ad agencies attend first Newhouse NYC Advertising Portfolio Review

Syracuse University’s Fisher Center was teeming with recruiters and creative directors from New York City’s leading advertising agencies last month.

They had come to review the creative portfolios of graduating seniors in the Newhouse School’s advertising department as part of the first annual Newhouse NYC Advertising Portfolio Review event.

The students, all part of the department’s portfolio program, intend to enter the advertising business as copywriters and art directors. High quality portfolios will be a key part of reaching that goal, says advertising assistant professor Mel White. “The currency of the creative career in advertising is the portfolio,” she says.

White organized the portfolio review with advertising professor of practice Kevin O’Neill. Both are former New York City advertising professionals, and are jointly responsible for the department’s portfolio curriculum. Calling upon their extensive professional contacts, they brought 17 agencies to the review, including TBWA/Chiat/Day; Wieden+ Kennedy; Y&R; R/GA; Ogilvy; JWT; 360i; FCB; Arnold; McGarryBowen; and Gotham.

Agency professionals were impressed with the students’ portfolios and provided valuable feedback. White says several of the participating students also received internship or job offers.

The most important part of the event, says White, was that students made industry contacts that can serve them well into the future.

“O’Neill and White have transformed the quality of our portfolio program, and this successful New York City event is powerful evidence of that,” says James Tsao, chair of the advertising department. “Our creative students are succeeding at the best agencies in the country.”
