“Newhouse provided me the training and confidence to command a room, and be able to speak to topics and techniques beyond the surface of general journalist training.”

Justin Bryant G’15 graduated with a master’s of arts degree in magazine, newspaper and online journalism. Bryant works as a managing editor of the digital publication Magnifier Magazine, media property of Vayner Publishing.

How did you get the job?

Initially, it started from a very vague job posting on Indeed. After a very thorough and rigorous vetting process, I ended up with a much larger role than originally planned.

What are your responsibilities?

  • Plan and manage the editorial calendar and portfolio.
  • Concept, create and edit articles with a focus on producing intriguing/engaging feature content with strong virality.
  • Hire, manage and edit the work of associate and social editors.
  • Vet and edit influential contributors and freelancers.
  • Manage and organize site assets (images, articles, videos).
  • Lead experimentation on social media feeds, especially Pinterest and Instagram.
  • Find ways to create engaging and thoughtful content derived from Internet trends.
  • Concept, execute and art direct original imagery to accompany articles and be displayed directly on social media.
  • Constantly experiment with new content types and ideas.
  • Build relationships with ad partners.

How did Newhouse prepare you for your job?

Newhouse provided me the training and confidence to command a room, and be able to speak to topics and techniques beyond the surface of general journalist training.

Why did you select Newhouse for graduate studies?

I selected Newhouse because of Melissa Chessher. I asked her one question, “Will Newhouse make me great?” She responded, “If you want it, and are fine with working for it, then yes.”

What is unique about your graduate program?

My graduate program allowed us to diversify our skills and take courses outside of our program, such as Google Analytics or the media and fashion course.

Describe your most valuable/significant experience at Newhouse.

It is a tie between, Steve Masiclat’s constant tough love approach towards improving your craft, and Harriet Brown’s constant push to require you teach your reader why your writing has value.

Is there a professor or class that you would recommend?

I would suggest Adam Peruta’s Designing Interactivity course. It will change not only your life but your career, trust me. I work with coders every day for my magazine, and now that I have a brief understanding of that world it makes executing content so much easier.

What advice do you have for current or incoming students?

I welcome anyone interested in writing for Magnifier Magazine (themagnifier.com), student or alumni to reach out to me. I’d love to provide the same opportunities afforded to me while I was there.
