Brittany Campbell, G’11, graduated with a master’s in new media management (NMM) after completing an undergraduate degree in magazine from Newhouse. She is currently working as a senior account manager for media and entertainment at Google.

What are your job responsibilities?

As an account manager, I handle paid media campaigns for cable TV clients across Google and YouTube. The account manager role at Google is extremely fast-paced and project management is key. I love this job because every week is different! One day I could be talking about how CRM data can port into Google Analytics, another I might be talking to a creative agency on what content strategies work best on YouTube.

How do you feel Newhouse prepared you for your current job?

Newhouse was instrumental in giving me the communication skills needed to navigate a large organization like Google. The new media management program gave me a comprehensive understanding of an ever-changing digital landscape, and as I joined the workforce, I quickly realized this gave me an advantage over other recent graduates applying for the same jobs. There is such a large network of Syracuse alumni at Google, and this has allowed me to network in a more organic way.

Why did you select Newhouse for graduate studies?

The NMM program appealed to me because Newhouse is a world class communications school and Whitman is such a strong business school that a program merging both worlds seemed like it would give me the most comprehensive education possible. Since my undergraduate degree was in magazine journalism, I felt like I needed more experience learning about the rise of digital media and the business/economics of it all. 

What was unique about your graduate program?

Professor Masiclat was a wonderful mentor and leader for our program. I also met so many amazing, diverse people within the NMM program who I remain in touch with today. It was a great learning and life experience! 

Describe your most valuable/significant experience at Newhouse.

I was a student in Professor Glavin’s last class at Newhouse. The most memorable experience was when he edited my review of Harry Potter in front of the whole class—there was a lot of red ink when he was done! He made me a better writer and taught us important life lessons not on a course syllabus that I will take with me forever.

Best on-campus memory or activity?

Our spring break in New York City was very memorable. We met with so many amazing thought leaders at digital and traditional media companies and learned so much from them. Aside from that, I loved the group projects as it allowed for a team-like atmosphere and hours on end spent at Food.com.

What advice do you have for current or incoming students?

Be open to any and all jobs after you graduate. I was constantly worried that I wouldn’t graduate with the “perfect” job, but looking back I learned so much from each job and that unique experience has driven me to where I am today. Also, take advantage of the Newhouse Network. It is filled with amazing individuals who were in your shoes at one time and want to help you along the way.
