Ashley Kang

Director, The Stand Newspaper Project Newspaper & Online Journalism

Ashley Kang serves as director of The Stand, Syracuse's South Side community newspaper project, which was founded by Professor Steve Davis and is produced in partnership with Newhouse students, Syracuse residents and a community board of directors. Ashley assists students in finding stories reflective of the people who live on the South Side; coordinates and leads community journalism workshops; and has oversight of all day-to-day needs of the project.

She also assists faculty with other community engagement projects, including the Fowler Film Project, through which students of professor Richard Breyer partner with city high school students for a semester to produce mini-documentary films.

Ashley worked on a joint project with the Near Westside Initiative (NWSI) to develop two in-depth, glossy magazines published in English and Spanish, produced by reporting, photography and design students and distributed throughout the West Side community.

In the summer of 2014, she coordinated a summer-long community storytelling project that paired eight city residents with professional mentors. The "From Where We Stand" project launched with a website featuring community members' stories and a gallery exhibit. The project received a Gifford Foundation Grant and partnered with the NWSI and local PBS station WCNY, which produced an "In Sight" episode about the participants.

Before joining the university, Ashley worked at The Citizen, a daily newspaper based in Auburn, New York, as a copy editor and features editor.

She is a graduate of the Newhouse School and the School of Education at Syracuse University.
