The undergraduate course of study emphasizes management functions and practical applications of theory and is the model for all other accredited public relations programs in the nation. Classes in public relations are small, often with no more than 15 to 20 students per class. Many are taught seminar style, involving extensive discussion and interaction among students.
Some classes simulate real life activities, such as news conferences and on-camera interviews. Others require teams of students to produce public relations campaign plans based on strategic planning models; to conduct social science research applying both qualitative and quantitative methods; and to design and execute communications materials for clients. Clients for these classroom activities often are local social service and non-profit organizations such as the United Way and the American Cancer Society.
