The newspaper major focuses on reporting and writing. Students take three writing/reporting courses along with editing and specialized courses in politics, business, sports, features or investigative reporting. Hands-on experience comes from covering events both on and off campus. A city the size of Syracuse offers numerous opportunities for reporting breaking news and in-depth features. Internships are strongly encouraged and often lead to full-time employment after graduation. As with all Newhouse students, newspaper journalism requires that the bulk of courses be taken in the arts and sciences, courses that help graduates become well-rounded and well-informed individuals. Most newspaper students select a second major in the College of Arts and Sciences.
