The Advertising curriculum is heavily project oriented. Students may develop and refine concepts in a portfolio class or put together a sales presentation in a media course. They work on writing strategies and then create the ads that communicate that strategy to the target audience. Real experience comes from the research class in which students conduct surveys for local advertising firms. Each class results in portfolio-building projects that employers highly prize. As with all the majors at Newhouse, advertising students take the majority of their courses in the arts and sciences in order to become a fully informed individual. All have a minor in a related field - psychology, marketing, and information studies are the most popular among ad majors - and many elect to carry a second major as well.
