Newhouse School of Communications

Research Centers & Special Programs:

One of the elements that makes a school an exciting place to study--and that separates it in quality from other schools--is its research centers and special programs. The Newhouse School is fortunate to be home to a number of such centers and programs.

The Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture looks seriously at the role of entertainment television in shaping popular culture. The Center's director, Robert Thompson, is a nationally-recognized expert in the history of prime time television and an astute chronicler of television's impact. The Center brings guests to campus, edits a series of books on television, and maintains a large archive of unique television-related materials. Interested students may take a television criticism course with Professor Thompson.

Professor Charlotte Grimes is the Knight Chair in Political Reporting here at the Newhouse School. The chairholder's mission is to support strong political coverage that enriches democracy, holds public officials accountable, helps us understand the effects of politics on our lives, and gives citizens the knowledge to be self-governing.

Since 1990, the John S. and James L. Knight foundation has endowed Knight Chairs in Journalism at 20 U.S. colleges and universities. Chairholders are professional journalists who inspire excellence; collaborators who reach out and innovate; catalysts around whom universities can build expanded programs; visionaries who strive to improve American journalism.

Professor Grimes teaches courses in Political Reporting and The Press and American Democracy.

The mission of the Tully Center for Free Speech is to educate university students and the public about the important value of free speech. Through education, resources and research, the Center strives to contribute to the discussion of media law issues in New York State, the nation, and the world.

The center is named for Syracuse University alumna Joan Tully, a journalist, lawyer and businesswoman, who cared deeply about protecting and promoting freedom of speech. She wanted to encourage teaching and research about media law and free-speech issues, and to honor communicators who face free-speech threats.

"When I started as a freshman at Newhouse, my chief goal was to become a sportscaster. I knew I was coming to one of the few universities that could seriously launch me into the field..... Little did I know that my career would take me literally all over the world."
