The CDC can assist you in a variety of ways.

INDIVIDUAL APPOINTMENTS
Newhouse students can meet one-on-one with an adviser to have a resume or cover letter reviewed, discuss career and/or internship plans, focus a job or internship search and more. To schedule an appointment, please stop by the CDC (room 20, Newhouse I). Appointments are not scheduled via e-mail or over the phone.

STUDENT LISTSERVS - CDCNEWS and CDCGRADNEWS
Two listservs are produced by the CDC (one for undergrads, one for graduate students.) These are released twice a week and contain information on CDC events and services, on-campus career activities, tips, leads and more. Students are automatically added to these listservs when they enroll in a Newhouse major.

If you are an undergrad and are not receiving CDCNEWS, please e-mail kmcgee@syr.edu to be added.

If you are a master's student and are not receiving CDCGRADNEWS, please e-mail kmcgee@syr.edu to be added.

JOB AND INTERNSHIP LISTINGS
Postings are advertised on our listservs and are available for viewing in the CDC office. The CDC also houses a searchable internship database. These listings are available to Syracuse University students only.

NACAN
The Newhouse Alumni Career Advisory Network (NACAN) is a database of over 3,400 Newhouse alumni who have offered their contact information so that you may call/e-mail them to discuss how they broke into their fields, tips on succeeding, etc. The NACAN database is searchable and is only available at the CDC (not available via the Internet.) Attendance at the Job Hunt Marathon seminar is required to use this service for seniors and graduate students. For underclassmen, attendance at the "Finding an Internship" seminar and an appointment with a CDC advisor can give you access to limited alumni contacts from a CDC staff member.

SEMINARS
The CDC offers four seminars during the academic year. Sign up is required (visit the CDC):

  • Job Hunt Marathon - A three-hour "how to" on organizing a proactive job hunt. Learn how to focus skills, create a target list off companies, research those companies and then network with people in the industry. This seminar is geared toward those who will be in the job market in the next six to nine months. Attendance is required for Newhouse students planning on using the alumni database, NACAN.
  • How to Find an Internship - A 45-minute "how to" on organizing a proactive internship search. Students learn how to narrow their focus, research opportunities and use CDC resources to assist them in their efforts.
  • Basic Resume and Cover Letter Writing - An hour-long session that teaches how to target your resume and letter to your audience, what to include, common mistakes made, etc.
  • Interview Etiquette - An hour-long seminar covering interview preparation, what to expect, how to answer tough questions, etc.

EVENTS
The CDC organizes various career and recruitment events throughout the year for SU students, including a fall communications internship fair and the Central New York Communications Consortium-the largest collegiate communications recruitment event in the nation (spring.) In addition, the CDC organizes various career development events such as Communications Career Day (for freshmen,) Media Management Day, "This Way to LA," and various alumni networking panels.
