Newhouse School of Communications

Career Paths:

Graphics and Photography

Graphics
Opportunities for graphic artists and designers are extensive as their skills are used in many, many facets of the communications industry. Publishers, magazines, newspapers, graphic design firms, advertising and public relations firms, as well as in-house corporate communications offices, employ graphic artists. The new media boom has provided numerous opportunities for those interested in layout, design and the overall look of visual images. Typical starting jobs are in basic page layout and design at newspapers, production departments of magazines and designing web pages at new media firms.

Photography
Images are used in many communications fields - magazine, newspaper, broadcast journalism, multimedia, public relations and graphics. Photographers usually go two different routes - photojournalism, covering news, or photo illustration for advertising, art and other creative venues. Established photographers often work "freelance," or on assignment. Beginning photo illustrators usually start as photo or production assistants at a studio or magazine while they hone their skills. Television stations, newspapers, wire services and magazines employ photojournalists. New media has created greater opportunity for photographers to get their work published as well.
