Ph.D. Advising for Current Students

Academic Advisers

When a student first enrolls in the doctoral program, the Director of Doctoral Studies assigns an Academic First-Year Adviser. The First-Year Adviser is a Newhouse faculty member who has an earned doctorate. Doctoral students select their formal Academic Adviser no later than the end of their second semester in the program. The Academic Adviser serves as the chair of the Qualifying Examination Committee. The Academic Adviser must be a Newhouse faculty member and have an earned doctorate.

Dissertation Advisers

Upon admission to candidacy, the student will seek out a faculty member to serve as the Dissertation Adviser to guide the student through the process of completing the dissertation. The Dissertation and Academic Advisers may be the same person. The Dissertation Adviser must be a Newhouse faculty member who has earned a doctorate and has expertise in the student's research area.
