Professor Mason has a background in communications photography, television, newspaper, magazine, radio, and molecular genetics (his Ph.D. is in the latter field). He is a former picture editor and staff photographer for the Syracuse Herald-Journal and Herald-American. He served as the Central New York picture coordinator for United Press International. He also free-lances for the New York Times and U.S. News and World Report. In addition, Professor Mason served for five seasons as the Host/Writer of "Winter Gardening" on the Home and Garden Television Network (HGTV).


During his time at Syracuse University, he has received several teaching awards including the Student Government Association Teacher of the Year, and his designation as a member of the "Gateway Fellowship."

Professor Mason founded and directs a summer program in fashion photography at the Syracuse University London Centre.

Professor Mason teaches classes in fashion and portrait photography, general photography, color photography, visual critical issues, mass media and society, and interactive media design.

He is co-author of Looking For Lockerbie, Worldwide Orange Publications through Syracuse University Press, Syracuse, NY, October, 2008.  The book celebrates Lockerbie, Scotland and its people.
