Carol M. Liebler is an associate professor in the Newhouse School. She is Director of the Doctoral Program and Media Studies Master's program.

Liebler teaches graduate courses in communication theory, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and media and diversity. Undergraduate courses include communication and society, and race, gender and the media. In addition, Liebler advises several dissertation and/or thesis students each year.

Liebler's research interests are in media sociology, with particular attention to diversity and the media. Her research has focused on the role of race, ethnicity and gender in newsgathering and reporting, using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Recent work includes analysis of the role of class, race and gender in media coverage of missing women. Another study explores reporters' roles at Chinese-language newspapers.

She has published in outlets such as The Howard Journal of Communication, Journalism Educator, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Journalism Quarterly, Mass Comm Review and Newspaper Research Journal. She serves on the editorial boards of Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, Mass Communication & Society, and Newspaper Research Journal.

Liebler has presented conference papers at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, International Communication Association and Speech Communication Association, among others. She has served as chair of the AEJMC Standing Committee on Research and as a member of the AEJMC Executive Committee. She recently chaired the AEJMC Oversight Committee on Diversity.Liebler holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (in mass communications), an MS from San Diego State University (in mass communication) and a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara (in sociology and anthropology).
