Barbara Croll Fought (rhymes with "boat") has been teaching at the Newhouse School since Fall, 1993. She teaches radio and television writing, reporting, producing and communications law.
The Class of 1995 awarded her the "Teaching Excellence Award." Ms. Fought is the co-author of a reporting textbook, "News in a New Century," published by Pine Forge Press in January, 1999, and a contributor to "Click on Democracy," written by several Newhouse professors.
In Fall, 2006, Professor Fought was appointed as the part-time director of the Tully Center for Free Speech, an educational and research center focusing on free speech and media law, at the Newhouse School. See tully.syr.edu.
She formerly worked as a special projects producer at WDIV-TV, Detroit, specializing in investigative reporting and politics. There she earned 18 national, state and local awards, including nine Emmys. In summer 2005, she worked for a month at WPTZ-TV, Burlington-Plattsburgh, to refresh her skills. Fought previously worked as a public relations practitioner, newspaper reporter and lecturer at Eastern Michigan University.
Her research interests include government secrecy, access to public documents and meetings, and reporters' use of the Internet. She runs a discussion group on the Internet, FOI-L, which deals with state and local freedom of information issues.
Professor Fought earned a J.D. cum laude at the University of Detroit Mercy in 1992, and a BSJ summa cum laude at Ohio University in 1976. She was formerly a licensed attorney in Michigan.
She lives in Jamesville with her husband, Nelson Price, a retired cable television executive.
