During their time at Newhouse, many graduate students seek fellowships and internships to expand their interests in their career field. As the first recipient of the Deutsch Diversity Fellowship, Stacy Malden, a graduate advertising student, has had the opportunity to receive both.

A graduate of The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Stacy had always been interested in media and the role advertising plays in communicating with consumers. Upon graduation, she worked at OSU and soon became fascinated with how companies can better reach their consumers. She entered an OSU Master’s program where she studied theory based principles, but became interested in Syracuse University because of the level of creativity the program would allow her to explore.
“One of the most challenging decisions to be made by an advertiser is how to make the message relevant to the people you’re trying to engage,” she said. “I knew the program at Newhouse would put me in a much better position to make these decisions.”
Established by Donny Deutsch , high profile chairman of the advertising agency Deutsch Inc. and host of CNBC’s “The Entrepreneurs,” the Deutsch Diversity Fellowship is given to graduate students studying advertising or public relations, with preference to minority students. Stacy knew this opportunity would put her on the path to a career in any form of advertising.
In addition to tuition benefits and a stipend, the program provides a paid summer internship experience at Deutsch Inc. in New York City or at a sister agency agreed upon by the company and the student. Upon completion of the internship, Stacy may be offered a full-year position or entry level job at Deutsch Inc. or one of its affiliates.
Stacy says her ultimate plan is to help manage advertising and other marketing communications for non-profits and other great organizations. She feels the faculty in the Newhouse advertising program are leading experts in the field and continue to challenge her in creative dialogue.
“I might not know specifically what I want to do after graduation,” Stacy said with a laugh, “but I have full confidence that the Newhouse School will put me in a position to be ready for it.”
