Advertising students from SU’s Newhouse School to participate in national student advertising competition in Washington, DC this week

June 2, 2009

Students from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications will participate in the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), the nation’s most prestigious student advertising competition, June 4-5 in Washington, DC. The Newhouse student team beat out teams from nine other schools in District 2 to reach the finals.

Participating Newhouse students include Erica Bruno, Peter Ceran, Gregory Rozmus, Paul Savaiano and Maria Sinopol. Ed Russell, assistant professor of advertising in the Newhouse School, is the team’s advisor.

The NSAC is a yearly competition administered by the American Advertising Federation (AAF). This year’s sponsor is The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. This year’s contest is unique in that it is the first time in the competition’s 36-year history that student’s have been tasked with addressing a social issue: combating the overconsumption of alcohol on our nation’s college campuses.

The Century Council is joined in this effort by the Ad Council, a nonprofit organization that marshals the pro bono resources of the advertising and media industries to create public service campaigns; and the American Council on Education (ACE), the major coordinating body for all the nation's higher education institutions.
