Documentary film to be screened at SU’s Newhouse School April 22

A new documentary by filmmaker Thea St. Omer, adjunct instructor in Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will be screened on Wednesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Halmi Screening Room, Room 141 in Newhouse 3. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
The film, “Nigger” (2009, 112 minutes, b&w, video), features several people, among them noted artists and scholars, discussing and dissecting the word “nigger.” Newhouse faculty members Roosevelt “Rick” Wright, associate professor of television-radio-film, and Francis Ward, associate professor of newspaper, both appear in the film.
“I hope that people, even those most offended by the word ‘nigger,’ see the film, and that they judge it by its content rather than by its title,” St. Omer says.
St. Omer is the recipient of individual artist fellowships from the Jerome Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Bronx Council on the Arts, New York Women in Film and Television, and the New York Foundation for the Arts.
