The CDC assists alumni in a variety of ways:
INDIVIDUAL APPOINTMENTS/PHONE CONSULTATIONS
The CDC is open year-round. If you are going to be in the Syracuse-area, consider stopping in to take advantage of our resources or meet with an advisor. Alternatively, you may make an appointment for a phone consultation. Advisors can review resumes and cover letters, discuss career plans, focus a job search and more.
To schedule an appointment, please call 315-443-3270. For CDC hours, please click here. Please call in advance. Due to scheduling constraints, drop-ins and immediate phone consultations can rarely be accommodated.
JOBOPS LISTSERV
Newhouse Alumni are welcome to sign up for JobOps, the CDC's listserv that details numerous communications employment opportunities. JobOps is emailed to over 3,000 alumni on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. In order to sign up for JobOps, you must be a Newhouse alumnus. To sign up for JobOps, please click here.
NACAN
The Newhouse Alumni Career Advisory Network (NACAN) is a database of over 3,800 alumni who have offered their contact information up so that current students and fellow alumni may call/e-mail them to discuss how they broke into their fields, tips on succeeding, etc. The NACAN database is searchable and is only available at the CDC (not available via the Internet.) However, alumni may make a NACAN pull request by clicking here. (Quid pro quo!) If you are not a member of NACAN, please click here to join.
GUIDE SHEETS
The CDC publishes numerous handouts, templates, examples and instructions on starting your job hunt, drafting written materials, etc. Please e-mail belichti@syr.edu to make a request.
RESUME AND COVER LETTER REVIEW SERVICE
CDC advisers can edit/comment on your written career materials. Please e-mail materials in MICROSOFT WORD format to kmcgee@syr.edu. Comments will be snail-mailed back to you as soon as possible. It is helpful if you indicate the type of employer you are targeting your materials to when sending for review.
DIRECTORIES, TRADE MAGAZINES AND PERIODICALS
The CDC houses industry directories (such as O'Dwyer's and Bacon's), local and national newspapers and over 60 industry trade magazines. Feel free to stop in during business hours if you are in the area to do some research.
