Newhouse School of Communications

Dean Branham:

Dean's Message:

It is impossible to overstate the important role the mass media play in American life. They provide us with the information we need to function as a democracy, including our views of other societies, the performance of elected officials, the role of the military, the state of the economy, and more. They also entertain the public and shape public taste, as well as frame events and help us decide what to think about them.

There is no more exciting profession than being a part of the mass media so that you have a role in shaping popular culture and informing the public. Media professionals, however, must know a lot more than how to write, edit, shoot, plan campaigns and make public presentations. They must also have a strong liberal arts background. This, too, is part of the Newhouse experience. Many Newhouse students are dual majors in the College of Arts and Sciences (taking one major in Newhouse and a second in Arts and Sciences), or they have one or two minors in Arts and Sciences. They are as excited about courses in history, politics, religion, Spanish and psychology as they are in script writing, advertising, or news reporting.

The strength of the Newhouse School is rooted not just in its own national reputation, and the reputation of its many outstanding alumni and faculty members, but also in the quality of the liberal arts offerings at a great research university, which SU most surely is.

We welcome students who are curious about the world and who want to change it for the better by using the enormous power of mass communications. Join us.
