As a Newhouse advertising major, you will create professional campaigns and learn sales presentation techniques. And you’ll be part of a program with a tradition of winning top honors in national college competitions. In addition, a steady stream of advertising CEOs and other industry professionals visit Newhouse each semester and share their expertise with you.
What we teach
The Newhouse advertising major offers courses in strategy, media planning, advertising research, portfolio building, copy writing and advertising campaigns. You'll also study across the communications curriculum in areas such as graphic design and communications law. In addition, you'll choose an emphasis as part of your major coursework. Some of these include account management, planning and research; integrated media planning; web advertising; creative production and advertising messages; and advertising for social or political causes.
With the help of academic advisers, you may also craft your own emphasis using electives in management, sociology, fashion, psychology, television, film, African-American studies, Latino studies, political science and health, among others.
Throughout your courses, you'll put the theories to the test with real-life clients, creating campaigns and presentations. You might choose to join the award-winning TNH, a student-run ad agency, or pursue internships that add to your experience. You'll hear from advertising executives and other practitioners in the field who come to campus regularly to share their insights.
Once you graduate, you'll see opportunities in advertising agencies, major corporate advertising departments, newspapers, magazines and broadcasting companies. You may also land a position at a corporate communications firm or in advertising sales.
The Newhouse School’s undergraduate advertising program was named among the top five digital programs in the country by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB).
