Jobs & Careers

Student Employment

In addition to instructional associate positions, there are also hourly jobs available in Newhouse. These positions include research, teaching support, and administration. Information and applications are distributed over the summer, at the beginning of each semester, or as jobs open up.

Various positions are also available throughout the university. The listing is available on JOBNET, through the University's Student Employment Office at http://seo.syr.edu/sujobopps.html.

The majority of our students hold at least one part-time job. Many work at Newhouse or in other areas on campus. Most recommend working 10-15 hours a week, but nothing more. Also, it's nearly impossible to work during the summer due to the intense class schedule.

Career Information

Newhouse has its own Career Development Center (CDC) dedicated to helping our enrolled students and alumni conduct a self-directed, proactive job and/or internship search. Because the communications industry can be far more difficult to break into than others, the CDC works with students to prepare them to enter their chosen field successfully. The CDC provides Newhouse students with access to career guides, industry trade magazines and directories, and an alumni database of nearly 3,000 former Newhouse students, now working successfully in the communications industry.

The CDC also provides students with job and internship listings, resume critiquing, and "job hunt" seminars. Frequent updates on CDC activities and job and internship opportunities are sent to all Newhouse students, and the CDC also organizes a Communications Internship Fair and the Central N.Y. Communications Recruiting Consortium each year.

We strongly encourage all students to take advantage of the Newhouse Career Development Center for help with resume writing, interviewing etiquette, job-hunting skills, or whatever questions you may have about your job search.  Get to know the staff. Begin early. Since you only have a year here, it pays to plan ahead. Lots of job leads come through this office, not to mention the access to the alumni career advisory network, which is an invaluable tool as you begin your job search.

Recent graduate student employment statistics are posted on their site, above.
