Academic Advising

Academic advising at the Newhouse School includes a network of services to support your studies. Faculty advisors, peer advisors, the Newhouse Undergraduate Records Office, the Associate and Assistant Deans for Student Affairs and the Newhouse Career Development Center all play key roles in helping students discover and pursue a wide range of majors, minors and academic opportunities offered at Syracuse University.

Faculty advisors can help you discover your interests, guide you in your course choices, and answer your questions. First-year students are scheduled for an advising seminar--COM 100: Seminar for First-Year Students--which meets during the first few weeks of the fall semester. Through this seminar, you will have regular contact with your faculty advisor and a small group of Newhouse students and become better acquainted with opportunities within the school and the University. While you are required to see your faculty advisor at least once each semester before registration through your first and second years in the Newhouse School, you can see your advisor at any time during the semester throughout your four years. We hope you will see your advisor for many reasons, such as discussing your minor, electives, career goals and internship opportunities. An advisor is a valuable contact who can help you academically and professionally if you take the time to meet with him or her regularly.

As you discover more about what you would like to do professionally, you may decide to change your advisor to someone who can direct you more specifically in your area of interest. You will be assigned to an advisor in your major at the end of your sophomore year, if you have not chosen a major advisor before then.

Peer advisors are Newhouse students who assist new students. They are good students themselves, and they are knowledgeable about requirements and the University. While your peer advisor’s formal role ends after your first semester, he or she is available to you as a resource throughout your first year.

In addition to having a faculty advisor and a peer advisor, each Newhouse student is also assigned to a recorder, who is an expert on degree requirements and school or University procedures and rules and can answer your questions. A copy of your records is kept in the Newhouse Records Office, as are academic forms and information.   Before your senior year, you will be required to meet with your recorder and have a personal DEGREE AUDIT which will outline what you have left to complete to earn your degree. At other times, if you feel uncertain about your requirements, you may request a copy of your check sheet to review with your advisor or recorder.

We supplement advising at Newhouse with group meetings on various topics. Some will be required; some will be recommended. You will get advising mailings from us with important information one or more times during the semester. You should also visit the Newhouse Career Development Center (313 Newhouse 3) to seek career advice and to sign up for appropriate workshops as you transition from campus media to off-campus internships.

Your faculty advisor, your peer advisor, the Records Office, the Career Development Center and our offices are all here to offer help and guidance. We hope you will take the initiative to seek help when you need it and to take advantage of the opportunities available to you. As seniors know, undergraduate years go by very quickly. We are here to help you take charge of your time and education at the outset and make each one of your courses contribute to your learning and growth.
