Tina Press & David Rubin Career Development Center

ABOUT THE NEWHOUSE CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER (CDC)

Founded in 1991, the Tina Press & David Rubin Career Development Center (CDC) at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications provides students and alumni with the essential skills, services and resources necessary to conduct a successful, proactive job/internship search.

SERVICES

ONE-TO-ONE ADVISING APPOINTMENTS: Students and alumni may make one-to-one advising appointments with the staff of the CDC to discuss career-related issues, including (but not limited to) finding internships and employment, interview etiquette, résumé and cover letter-writing, and networking. To make an appointment, students should stop by the CDC in person. Phone appointments are available to alumni— the CDC’s services are life-long. To make an alumni appointment call 315-443-3270.

RESUME & COVER LETTER REVIEW SERVICE: The CDC can critique written career materials, including cover letters, résumés and networking correspondence. Once students have taken the Résumé and Cover Letter Seminar, students may utilize the office’s drop-off service. All submitted materials will be reviewed and ready for pick-up within two business days of being dropped off. Once students have taken the Job Hunt Marathon (see SEMINARS), they may also use the drop-off service to get feedback on networking correspondence.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Throughout the academic year, the CDC hosts alumni and speakers from the various fields of communications to speak with students about their fields and jobs, as well as to dispense career advice. In addition, the CDC puts on two annual events to help students gain valuable hands-on experience and make connections in the communications field: the Communications Internship Fair (fall) and the Central New York Communications Consortium (spring).

COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP FAIR: The Newhouse Internship Fair provides an opportunity for students to connect with  local, regional and national companies. All students are welcome to come to the fair to mix and mingle with employers, collect business cards, pick up company information or drop off a résumé.

CENTRAL NY COMMUNICATIONS CONSORTIUM: The Central New York Communications Consortium (CNYCC) is an annual event held on the SU campus during which more than 40 national companies offering communications-based jobs, programs and internships come to campus to participate in the CNYCC’s two days of on-campus student interviews and career fair.

RESOURCES

SEMINARS: The CDC offers several seminars to current students multiple times throughout the academic year on the following topics: job hunting and networking, finding an internship, résumé and cover letter writing, and interviewing skills. A full schedule of dates and times is posted in the office, and upcoming sessions are listed in the CDC’s listservs.

NACAN: The ever-growing Newhouse Alumni Career Advisory Network (NACAN) is a database of more than 4,000 alumni who have voluntarily submitted their contact information. Current students and alumni may use this information to network, get “insider” tips on the industry, etc. NACAN is only available in the office and students must complete the Job Hunt Marathon (offered throughout the year) in order to access the database.  Newhouse alumni can request NACAN contacts through our website.

INTERNSHIP DATABASE: The CDC manages a database of current internship listings. Students may use the database to search for openings geographically, by employer or by industry. The office also maintains a hardcopy archive of  all past internships, available to students in the form of binders housed in the bookcases by the office entrance. Students visiting the CDC may  explore the “zigzag” posting wall, which lists the latest and greatest opportunities that have come into the office.

GUIDE SHEETS: The CDC publishes numerous handouts, templates, examples and instructions on a variety of career-related topics, such as how to execute a job hunt, drafting cover letters and résumés, interview etiquette, putting together an excellent portfolio, and more.

MEDIA GUIDES: Each year, the CDC purchases media guides, which are available for use within the office, to provide students with the most up-to-date information on the businesses and industries they are studying.

CDCNEWS & CDCGRADNEWS: The CDC has two email-based newsletters: CDCNews (for undergraduate students) and CDCGradNews (for master’s students). Each issue includes weekly updates of the latest job and internship opportunities, upcoming seminars and events, as well as information regarding speakers and employers who will be coming to campus. Once students graduate, they can sign up for an alumni listserv called “JobOps,” which includes numerous jobs listings, job-hunting advice, and other career-related information.

JOBOPS: JobOps is a weekly Newhouse alumni newsletter that includes numersous job listings, job hunting advice and other career related information.
