Facility
The Tina Press and David Rubin Career Development Center, located in 313 Newhouse 3, offers students a comfortable place to research communications careers, find job and internship opportunities and learn how to network with professionals in their chosen fields.
Founded in 1991, the CDC provides students and alumni with the essential skills, services and resources necessary to conduct a successful, proactive job/internship search.
Students may make appointments in the Career Development Center to receive one-on-one advising and discuss career-related issues such as finding internships and jobs, interview etiquette, resume and cover letter writing and networking. Phone appointments are available to alumni-- the CDC's services are life-long. Students may also have their resumes and cover letters reviewed by CDC during appointments or by using the office's drop-off service.
The CDC staff keeps current semester seminar schedules and sign up sheets in the office, and students are welcome to drop by and sign up for sessions that fit with their schedules.
Other CDC resources include:
NACAN, the Newhouse Alumni Career Advisory Network: NACAN is a database of more than 4,000 alumni who have voluntarily submitted their contact information. NACAN is only available in the CDC office and students must complete the Job Hunt Marathon seminar (offered throughout the year) in order to access the database.
Internship database: The CDC manages a database of current internship listings. Students may search for openings geographically, by employer, or by industry. Current internship opportunities are also posted inside the office.
Guide sheets: The CDC publishes numerous handouts, templates, examples and instructions on a variety of career-related topics, including executing a job hunt, drafting cover letters and resumes, interview etiquette and compiling a portfolio.
Media guides: Each year, the CDC purchases media guides, available for use within the office, to provide students with the most up-to-date information on the businesses and industries they are studying.
